This month we catch up with Rookes Pet Products – a busy independent family-run pet shop based in Spalding, Lincolnshire, only a few miles away from where our tasty baked Pointer biscuits are made. Julie, assistant shop manager, is always happy to share ideas with our sales team and this month was kind enough to update us on how our new Pointer Pick and Mix stands are being received by her customers (and their dogs!).
When you walk into Rookes, you cannot fail to see the Pointer Pick and Mix stand Julie. Positioned at the beginning of your treat aisle, it certainly makes it easy to find your treats. What do your customers think of the stand Julie?
It has been very popular within the store and we are finding that it’s creating lots of repeat custom. The treats stand out well.
Why do you like Pointer biscuits?
There is a really good range of different treats on offer – varied flavours and shapes – and they are all reasonably priced.
Why do you think your customers like Pointer treats and snacks?
They like the variety that the Pointer range has to offer and with the pick and mix they can personally choose a variety of treats for themselves. The Pointer stand makes choosing treats easier.
Do you have any tips for any fellow pet shop owners wanting to provide their customers with a good treat selection?

We know your pet shop life is busy, can you describe your average day?
It’s busy from the beginning until the end – but we enjoy it that way! Checking deliveries in and out, serving customers, advising customers (meeting dogs!), stock replenishment and placing orders. We have over 7,000 pet products in the shop, so there is a lot of variety for our customers to enjoy.
What’s the best part of your job?
That’s easy – customer satisfaction!
What challenges do you face?
Keeping up with the current trends is the biggest challenge – there is so much choice now.
And finally, we know that your also the proud owner of a very playful dog called Peanut. When you’re not busy in the pet shop, what do you get up to?
Peanut and I like to go for walks, play, watch movies and go on holiday together!
