There are many reasons you may need to change your dog’s treat routine – weight management or overindulgence, age, cost, or (as many dog owners will recognise) sometimes they like to decide after years of loving a certain treat, it’s not for them anymore!
All of these factors can also impact your own lifestyle and routine too, though. From how and when you treat your pet, to what you buy, how much it costs, and where you store it.
After producing dog treats in Britain for nearly 70 years – this is something we know all about. So, our Pointer pet experts have popped together some simple tips on how to spot when it’s time to paws and rethink your dog’s treating routine, and how to make the switch as smooth (and tail-waggy) as possible.
When To Change Your Dog’s Treat Routine
If Their Weight Is Creeping Up
If your dog has started to gain a little extra weight, even with their usual walks and playtime, it could be that their treats are a bit too rich or being given a bit too often. Keeping an eye on their waistline can help you spot when it’s time to scale back or switch to lighter options and treats that have added vitamins and nutrients to support their overall wellbeing.
If Their Needs Are Changing
As dogs get older, their needs change – just like ours do. They might develop sensitive tummies or dental issues, and that can make their usual crunchy favourites less appealing. Softer, gentler dog treats can help keep treat time comfortable and enjoyable.
If They’re Losing Interest
You might also notice them turning their nose up at treats they used to love. Don’t worry — they’re not being fussy, they just enjoy a bit of variety (just like we do!). Switching things up with different flavours, textures or shapes can bring back their excitement at treat time.
Our Pick and Mix stands – found in many of our UK stockists – are perfect for doubtful dogs. Load up a reusable cup full of different Pointer biscuits and small treats, and see what your pup prefers. We always love seeing your pups’ taste testing videos on our social media too, they never fail to make our team smile
If Your Lifestyle Has Shifted
It’s also worth reviewing your treat routine if your budget or lifestyle has changed, or if you’re looking to shop more sustainably – for example, by choosing British-made or more eco-friendly options. Small changes can make a big difference to both you and your dog.
Our Pointer treats start at just £2.50, perfect for budget-friendly buying without skimping on tail-wagging taste.
How To Change Your Dogs Treat Routine
Once you’ve decided to make a change, it’s best to do it gently. Sudden switches can upset your dog’s tummy, so start by mixing the new treats in with their usual favourites, offering small amounts at first. This way, they can get used to the new flavours while still enjoying what they know and love.
If you’re cutting back on calories, try breaking treats into smaller pieces (our new Pointer mini dogs are ideal for this). This lets you keep all the fun of treating, without the extra calories. Remember – treats should stay as treats, and not become a main part of their diet.
Above all, keep things positive and consistent. Stick to set times or moments for treating, like after a walk or during playtime, so your dog knows when to expect their special snack. And don’t forget, nothing beats a bit of fuss and praise too. Sometimes, your attention is their very favourite treat of all.
