National baking week

There’s something rather magical about the crisp October air, the rustle of autumn leaves, and the delightful chaos of children (and adults) getting excited about Halloween costumes.

But whilst you’re planning your spooky celebrations, don’t forget about your four-legged family members who deserve to join in the fun too!

National Baking Week (14th-20th October 2024) coincides perfectly with Halloween season, creating the ideal opportunity to don your apron and whip up some frightfully delicious treats for your canine companion. After all, if you’re carving pumpkins and baking treats for the trick-or-treaters, why shouldn’t your pup get some homemade goodies as well?

Why National Baking Week Deserves A Doggy Twist

National Baking Week celebrates the joy of home baking, and there’s something wonderfully satisfying about creating treats from scratch (we’ve been baking biscuits in our Lincolnshire farm since the 1950s – so we know all about it!).

When it comes to Halloween dog treats, making your own allows you to control every ingredient whilst having great fun with seasonal shapes and themes.

Baking for your dog during Halloween serves multiple purposes beyond just the obvious enjoyment. Homemade treats can complement your dog’s regular diet alongside their favourite Pointer biscuits and treats. It’s also perfect for dogs with specific dietary requirements, as you can tailor ingredients to suit sensitive tummies or allergies.

Most importantly, Halloween baking creates wonderful bonding opportunities. Your dog will love being involved in the kitchen activities (even if their involvement mainly consists of hopeful hovering and adorable begging faces), and the aromas of freshly baked goods will have the whole household excited.

The seasonal aspect adds extra joy too. Using autumn ingredients like pumpkin and apple means you’re incorporating flavours that naturally complement this time of year, creating treats that feel genuinely special rather than just another biscuit.

Keeping Your Dog Happy During Baking

Before we dive into recipes, let’s address the elephant in the room – or rather, the hopeful dog in the kitchen! Whilst you’re busy measuring and mixing, your furry friend will undoubtedly want to be involved in all the delicious action.

To keep them content and prevent kitchen chaos, consider having some of their regular treats on hand. A few Grain-Free Mini Dogs or Milky Petite Bones can work wonders for keeping curious noses occupied whilst you work. This also prevents them from becoming too fixated on the baking process, making the whole experience more enjoyable for everyone involved.

Three Spook-Tacular Recipes For Your Pup

Ghostly Oat Pumpkin Bites

These simple, ghost-shaped bites use only three safe ingredients and provide a gentle, digestible treat.

Ingredients:

200g rolled oats

100g pure pumpkin purée (check it contains only pumpkin)

1 egg

Method:

Preheat your oven to 180°C and line a baking tray.

Blend oats in a food processor until they form a rough flour.

Mix all ingredients until a sticky dough forms.

Shape small portions into ghost shapes on the tray.

Bake for 15-20 minutes until firm but not hard.

Cool completely before serving.

Spooky Bat Bites

These bat-shaped treats with its purple topping are no trick, they’re as delicious as they are spooky!

Ingredients:

150g rolled oats

1 ripe banana, mashed

2 tablespoons natural peanut butter (ensure completely xylitol-free)

1 egg

2 tablespoons wholemeal flour

Optional Purple Topping:

50g fresh blueberries

2 tablespoons plain Greek yoghurt (unsweetened)

Method:

Preheat oven to 180°C and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper.

Blend oats in a food processor until they resemble flour.

Mix oat flour, mashed banana, peanut butter, and egg until a dough forms.

On a floured surface, roll dough to 2cm thickness.

Cut into bat shapes using cutters or a template.

Bake for 15 minutes until golden brown, then cool completely on a wire rack.

For the topping: blend blueberries until smooth, mix with yoghurt to create purple colour, and spread on cooled biscuits.

This stage can be a bit of a handful. Teenage dogs often “forget” what they’ve learned and start testing boundaries. Hormones are at play, and it’s common for dogs to become more independent and distracted.

Spider Web Banana Oat Cookies

The web pattern makes these cookies delightfully themed, whilst the ingredients provide sustained energy perfect for active autumn days.

Ingredients:

2 ripe bananas, mashed

150g rolled oats

2 tablespoons natural peanut butter (xylitol-free)

1 egg

Method:

Preheat oven to 170°C and prepare a lined baking tray.

Combine all ingredients in a bowl until well mixed.

Drop spoonfuls onto the tray and flatten slightly.

Use a knife tip to create web patterns on the surface.

Bake for 15-18 minutes until set but still slightly soft.

Cool completely before storing.

These soft cookies work wonderfully for older dogs or those who prefer gentler textures.

Safety Guidelines For Halloween Baking

Always use fresh ingredients and ensure pumpkin purée contains only pumpkin with no added spices, sugars, or preservatives. Keep all ingredients well away from your dog during preparation, and never allow them to lick bowls or utensils that may contain raw eggs.

While you’re creating these spooky delights, remember that Halloween can present unique challenges for dogs. Keep chocolate, xylitol, and other toxic ingredients well away from curious noses. These homemade treats should complement, not replace, your dog’s balanced diet.

Consider making extra batches to share with doggy friends during Halloween walks – nothing spreads community spirit quite like homemade treats! Just ensure any dogs receiving your baking don’t have specific dietary restrictions or allergies.

It’s important to note that you should check with your vet before feeding your pooch anything that they’re not familiar with. Dogs with special dietary needs, such as diabetes, should refrain from eating anything outside of what has been recommended to you by a professional.
