With the warm weather upon us, there’s nothing quite like grabbing some fresh air outside! Outdoor games with dogs are a great way to burn some energy and create some fantastic, summery memories together.
Sometimes it can be hard to think of new dog game ideas so, we’ve compiled a list of our 5 favourite summer dog activities that will be fun and engaging for both you and your furry friend.
Active and Physical Games
1.Chase the Human
What you need: Just you and some open space!
How to play: Run away from your dog in a playful, zig-zag pattern and let them chase you. Add challenges by suddenly changing direction or dropping to the ground. This is a great recall and bonding game that builds trust and responsiveness.
2. Tug of War with Rules
What you need: A sturdy tug toy
How to play: This version of tug of war includes obedience challenges. Ask your dog to sit and wait before you say: “take it.” Pause during the game and cue your dog to “drop it,” “spin,” or “down” before resuming. It’s a fun way to reinforce listening while playing.
Dog-treat games
3. Cup Game
What you need: 3 plastic cups and some small treats. We recommend our Peanut Butter Small Bite Bones as they’re easy to hide, super tasty and perfect as a snack between mealtimes.
How to play: Firstly, place a treat under one of the cups in the grass. Then, shuffle the cups around and let your dog sniff and paw at the right one. Once they’ve worked out the correct cup, reward your dog with the treat hidden underneath!
4. Fetch & Find
What you need: A favourite fetch toy and some easy-to-throw treats.
How to play: Start off this game by playing a short round of fetch. After a few throws, switch it up: throw the toy, but when your dog returns, surprise them by throwing a treat instead. Our Pointer Mini Dogs are perfect to spot in the grass!
5. Treat Treasure Hunt
What you need: Small, smelly treats (like our Meaty Beefy Rolls)
How to play: While your dog is out of sight (or in a sit-stay), hide treats around your garden- under bushes, behind rocks, or in the grass. Then, release your dog and encourage them to “find it!” This game is perfect for hot days as it’s low energy and you can adapt the difficulty depending on the temperature.
Safety whilst playing outdoors with your dog
When enjoying outdoor activities with your dog during the summer, it’s crucial to prioritize their safety – especially in hot weather. High temperatures can quickly lead to heatstroke, dehydration, or burned paw pads on hot pavement.
Always bring plenty of fresh water, plan walks during cooler times like early morning or late evening, and avoid strenuous exercise when temperatures rise. Investing in dog-friendly gear like cooling vests or protective boots can also make a big difference.
By taking these precautions, you and your furry friend can safely enjoy walking, beach trips, and other outdoor adventures all summer long. Keep your dog safe, happy, and healthy while making the most of the great outdoors.
